The team's engineering tasks are divided into three groups:
design engineering, electronic engineering and track engineering.
The primary focus of design engineering is the development
of parts that will improve the performance of the race car.
From the time we receive a new chassis their task begins,
and continues until new ones arrive for the next season. In
a typical year, they will design up to 400 new parts specifically
for our car.
Electronic engineers are charged with the tasks of integrating
and maintaining the wiring and computer systems on the car,
installing instrumentation, and collecting massive amounts
of data from many points on the car. Ultimately this information
will be analyzed to make adjustments to the car.
The track engineers are the link between the driver and the
rest of the engineering staff. Their function is to interpret
what the driver is experiencing and use that information to
adjust the car, and to interface with the design engineers
to create new parts in maximizing performance.
As you can see, the engineers must work together as a team
in conjunction with the driver as a critical link.
